We are delighted to have had our packaging engineer Ashley do a Q&A with us so we can learn a little bit about her, and what she does at Illuminate!

Q: Can you tell us about yourself?

A: I am Ashley Owens and I have been with The Illuminate Group for 8 months. I was born and raised in Kissimmee, Florida. I went to college at the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and studied Biological Engineering with a concentration in Packaging Engineering. Packaging was perfect for me because it combined my passion for STEM and Design! I graduated in 2019 and worked in the flexible packaging industry for 4.5 years before joining the Illuminate Group.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your role at the Illuminate Group?

A: I am a Packaging Engineer at the Illuminate Group. My primary responsibility is to ensure that our packaging solutions maintain the integrity and safety of their contents throughout the entire supply chain, particularly for the medical and pharmaceutical industries. Additionally, I focus on the research and development of sustainable cold chain packaging solutions that minimize environmental impact.

Q: How do you ensure that packages keep their contents safe?

A: We conduct rigorous testing to simulate real-world conditions that packages might encounter during transit. Our state-of-the-art testing facilities and stringent protocols ensure that our packaging solutions meets or exceeds industry standards.

Q: Can you give an example of the type of testing you perform?

A: One key aspect of our testing involves thermal testing chambers, where we subject our packaging to extreme temperatures to ensure they can maintain the required temperature ranges. This approach helps us guarantee that our solutions provide the necessary protection for sensitive medical products.

Q: How does The Illuminate Group approach sustainability in cold chain packaging?

A: We are actively developing and implementing sustainable packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact. This includes using recyclable and biodegradable materials. By focusing on sustainability, we aim to provide our clients with packaging options that are both effective and environmentally responsible.

Q: Why is your work important in the medical industry?

A: In the medical industry, maintaining product integrity is crucial. Many pharmaceuticals and medical products are highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can compromise their effectiveness and safety. Our work ensures that these products remain stable and effective from the point of manufacture to the end user, ultimately protecting patient health and safety.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about your job?

A: The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that our efforts directly contribute to the health and well-being of patients. By ensuring that medical products arrive safely and in perfect condition, we play a vital role in the healthcare supply chain. Additionally, our commitment to sustainability means we are also protecting the environment, which adds another layer of fulfillment to my work.
