Perishable Food Cold Chain

Perishable Food Cold Chain

Perishable food items such as produce, meats, dairy, and flowers are the most common items requiring a well-functioning cold chain, yet it has not been perfected. Up to 40% of perishable items go to waste due to mishandling. Within the last 40 years, transportation, storage, harvesting, and logistics technologies have improved, but we are still throwing away 50% or more of our perishable goods. A lack of knowledge is the main reason why waste is at an all-time high, while quality is still an uncertainty. Even though quality is subjective, we can all appreciate a product with great flavor and texture. Food reaches our emotions, which strongly register positively or negatively. Research has shown that customers who experience a bad peach will not buy another peach for at least 8 weeks.

Producers place a significant amount of effort on product branding, but our recent survey showed that only 10% of customers base their purchase decisions on brand due to inconsistent quality. Retailers work to give the shopper a variety of products while providing a pleasant shopping experience, yet more than 95% of customers would increase their purchases of perishable items solely on the guarantee of at least 2 days of home shelf life. At the Illuminate Group, we continually develop solutions and deepen our knowledge in order to improve the quality and shelf life of perishable items while meeting the needs of suppliers, retailers, and consumers to implement an enhanced cold chain solution.

We have been working with growers/manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to develop patents, technologies, and procedures that have improved all aspects of the cold chain. Simple yet innovative solutions have been developed from harvesting/origin, packaging, precooling, transportation, storage, retail displays, and shelf-life modeling, all with the goal of delivering better-tasting and longer-lasting food.
